Basic Education in Papua New Guinea and the Role of BEDP

Background The development of the education sector is one of the highest priorities of Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG). The GoPNG National Education Plan has the goal of Universal Basic Education (UBE), with an outcome of access to equitable and quality education for all PNG children.

BEDP's Goal is to contribute to the effective implementation of quality and equitable primary schooling in PNG.

The expected outcomes of BEDP are:

A strengthened partnership between government(s), the school community and other providers of education services at the primary level.
An increase in primary school students accessing specialist facilities required for upper primary curriculum.
National Department of Education (NDOE) able to provide an ongoing primary and community school infrastructure monitoring and support system.
An ongoing national program of maintenance of primary and community school facilities being independently managed by provincial Department of Education (DOE), local level government and school communities.

BEDP is directly supportive of the GoPNG's policy direction for education and the Government of Australia's (GOA) PNG Country Program Strategy. BEDP represents a long term commitment to Primary Education by the GoPNG and GoA.

The project will be implemented by Department of Education staff and the community through existing national and provincial education structures.
